Teaching English as a foreign language

The course prepares students to teach English in Danish schools, focusing on language skills, cultural diversity, and teaching methods.

The course aims to develop students’ competences in the teaching of English as a foreign language in primary and lower secondary school.

It is concerned with the ways in which views both of language learning & teaching and of culture and cultural diversity have developed in recent decades and how these developments have affected the teaching of English in Denmark.

On a practical level, “Teaching English as a foreign language” introduces students to the communicative skills that are necessary to master a language and focuses in particular on the oral skills of speaking and listening.

Furthermore, it touches on topics such as the types of content used in English teaching in schools, cultural identity, popular culture and multimodality in order to develop students’ intercultural competence and global awareness.

The course therefore works with, among other things, principles of language acquisition and teaching, familiarity with the Danish curriculum for English and teaching resources designed for English teaching in Denmark, analysis of learner language, and development of students’ ideas and tools for classroom practice.
