Information for participants

We look forward to seeing you at the conference. There are approx. 100 registered participants, and the registration will be open until 4 March. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail with discount codes for

The conference programme begins Wednesday, April 6 at. 9.00 and ends on Friday 8 April at 13.00.

A preliminary programme with an overview of paper presentations will be posted on the website in mid-March.

This conference was originally scheduled for September 2021, but has been postponed because of covid-19. All registered participants have received an e-mail regarding the postponement. Please contact us if you are registered but have not received an e-mail.

The conference ‘Make it Together’ is for researchers and teachers at universities and university colleges within craft and design/sloyd and associated subjects in the Nordic countries. The conference will be held in Nordic languages as well as in English.

The conference will be focusing on collaboration as an overarching theme. By sharing knowledge and experiences, we will explore how collaboration can pave the way to learning and education.

The conference will take place 6-8 April 2022 with an opening reception on the evening of Tuesday 5 April.


The conference is being held with the current Danish Covid 19 restrictions.

‘Make it together’ is a relation between embodiment and education

’Make it together’ speaks of the power to create and fundamental relations between embodiment and education. Current educational debates in Denmark on mandatory programs of moving teaching out of school and the strengthening of vocational educations underline the need to be aware of the nuances in the relations between theory and practice.

However, creativity also inspire us to include aesthetical expressions in our research methodology as ways of bringing embodiment back into educational research.

Lars Emmerik Damgaard Knudsens research areas covers educational philosophy and general didactics with special interests in relations between theory and practice, knowledge forms, embodiment, out of school education, and material culture.

Small steps – big change – a reflection on creativity from the field of design

Research on creativity is increasingly focused on researching systems and on the distribution of creativity in the relations between for example humans and technology. To understand creativity in our hypercomplex, everyday life, we need to de-center the analysis on exactly relations extending human ways of thinking.

In this key-note, Lene Tanggaard will give us perspectives on this change in scale in research. She will also address why it is a necessary step and connect this with a simultaneous change seen in the design world – from making things to changing systems.

While designers still produce products, they increasingly see themselves as advocates of change and as agents connecting the dots. In this sense, small steps can stimulate big changes in the way we produce, consume, and surround ourselves with things. It is a new way of thinking creating a pathway for new ways of doing – that is making changes together.

Lene Taangaard is professor of educational psychology. Her research areas cover, among other things, creativity, learning and innovation. She has previously been Deputy Head of Department at Aalborg University and now holds the position as Rector at the Design School Kolding

Craft psychology – new perspectives on craft and health promotion

In this keynote a new area of research is presented, which describes the health-promoting effects of needlework and craftmanship

Craft psychology brings together all the known health-promoting effects of making craft and identifies and theoretically substantiates the psychological effects of working with crafts. And thereby opening opportunities to consciously promote well-being as well as counteract mental dissatisfaction through craft.

Anne Kirketerp is the researcher behind the field Craft Psychology, in which she researches and leads an education. She has previously been academic leader at Aarhus University and research leader at VIA UC.

Textile sustainability in craft- and design teaching – Relevance of interdisciplinary collaboration

Textiles has co-evolved with human mankind and has always been a substantial part of human life, in numerous ways. In a lifecycle perspective, textile activities include making, using, repairing, recycling, and caretaking of textiles. The time of industrialization and globalization only make up a small share of human developmental history, and yet this period is associated with substantial changes, also with respect to how we engage with textiles.

It is evident that human textile-activities are associated with global challenges and negative sustainability impact, as is the need for green transition. How to solve these challenges and accomplish this transition is, however, not so clear. Sustainability dynamics are complex and may appear abstract and overwhelming to individuals.

Where does that leave teaching in craft and design?

Joint, collaborative efforts appear to be crucial, among teaching colleagues, as well as with highly specialized experts outside the teaching community.

This presentation will address technical and environmental aspects of textiles, in lifecycle perspective, with respect to textile teaching and layman “bildund”, as well as aspects of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Birgit E. Bonefeld is experienced layman-communicator of technical and environmental aspects of textiles. She is specialised in BioTextiles, and employed at Aarhus University, as part of the Green Biorefining Technologies research group at Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering. Her research focus is on utilization of agrological sidestream biomass, as raw-materiale for textile production.

Excursion and conference dinner (7 April)

We will travel by bus from Campus Carlsberg to Lejre Land of Legends. Upon arrival we will enjoy coffee and cake.

In Lejre Land of Legends we will join a guided tour to the working workshops and learn how new knowledge is developed through ethnological, historical and archaeological experiments. We will also explore how Lejre Land of Legends intermediate through active dissemination and teaching.

Furthermore, we will be visiting the newly build Kings Hall. We will travel by bus back to Copenhagen and have dinner at a traditional danish restaurant in Frederiksberg.

About the conference

The conference is organised by the Teacher Education and the Textile Design Programme at Copenhagen University College, in collaboration with the Nordic Forum for Research and Development within Sloyd Education (NordFo). NordFo works for various forms of cooperation between the Nordic countries’ teacher training programs to initiate, stimulate and report research and development work in the field of Sloyd.

Three submission categories:

It is possible to submit abstracts within the three categories: research, development and workshops, as presented below.

Common guidelines for abstracts:

  • Abstracts should be written in the same language it will be presented in (Nordic languages or English).

The abstract should consist of:

  • Title of the presentation (font size 12, Arial, bold)
  • Name, department, university/university college and country (font size 12, Times New Roman, bold)
  • Category
  • Theme
  • 200‒250 words (font size 12, Times New Roman)

Guidelines for each of the three categories 

The research provides an opportunity to present relevant research work within one of the five themes. The abstract should include a description of the subject field, theory, method and empirical data, as well as how the research corresponds to a larger theme. Time for each presentation is 20 minutes, followed by a ten-minute discussion.

Development provides an opportunity to present different types of practice related projects and trials within the five themes. The abstract should include a description of the subject field, the purpose of the development, organization and experiences, as well as how the work fits into a larger theme. The presentation should be 20 minutes followed by a ten-minute discussion.

Practice submission with workshop provides an opportunity to carry out a workshop focusing on one of the five themes. The abstract should include a description of the content of the workshop, organization, didactic and academic purposes, research question, as well as how the work correspond to a larger theme. The workshop should be no longer than two hours.

Please state what kind of workshop space you need as well as tools or equipment.

The presenter is responsible for bringing materials.

Five themes for content

Whether you participate with a research contribution, development work or practice in workshop we encourage the content to be focused on one of the following five perspectives:

This theme focuses on the material and spatial significance for the sloyd, when materials, equipment and tools are used in educational, learning and manufacturing processes, and when crafting is an integral part of the teaching and communication.

Focus is on presentation and discussion about the importance of studio work for the subject and for the students’ learning processes, as well as how we can use the workshop framework to create a platform for good learning and collaboration.
What are the opportunities and challenges for immersion, the interaction between analogue and digital equipment, the traditional learning process versus more innovative processes, etc.?

This theme focuses on those forms of learning processes that are possible and characteristic for sloyd, and which are defined by specific practical, material, physical, aesthetic, analytical and co-creative processes. Participation in informal learning opportunities in the nature, collaboration with cultural institutions or active staging and exhibition activities can also have a significant impact on the learning process.

Focus is on presentation and discussion about different ways to learn, in the cross-section between practice professionalism, the artisanal, digital equipment, the material culture, multi-modality, interdisciplinarity as well as recycling and sustainability.
What are the opportunities and challenges for immersion – “to practice” – and for physical and practical work forms in the subjects? How do we explore and expose the specific learning processes which the subject area represents, and what is the contribution of the meeting with external collaborations partners outside the school?

This theme focuses on didactic perspectives in sloyd, in which digital equipment, multi-modality, changes in subject boundaries and new political and societal discourses and conditions continuously provides new demands for the organization of teaching.

Focus is on presentation and discussion about didactic practice in the subject area, as it takes form in the workshop, as a result of the teacher’s structure, chosen teaching methods and didactic grip, as well as in the students’ actions and response.

What are the opportunities and challenges when policy changes, increased demands of external collaborations as well as new goals and contents characterize the subject area?

This theme focuses on sustainability in relation to sloyd. The concept should be understood broadly as material-, social- and environmental sustainability as well as sustainability for the individual.
The focus is on presentation and discussion of practise, where sustainable development is central to learning and education through creative, productive and innovative processes.

What are the opportunities and challenges for the area in relation to materials, quality and consumption, ecology and recycling, cultural and social aspects, health and self-sufficiency?

This theme focuses on research within sloyd, both in teaching practice, but also in a broader cultural, historical, philosophical and sociological context.

Focus is on presentation and discussion of specific methodical and theoretical perspectives of research within the subject area, which contribute to the further development of research related to sloyd.

What are the research opportunities and challenges for development of theories and methods within the area; focus on the learning and educational potential, a revitalization of the subject area and a continuous need for acknowledgement and recognition of embodied learning processes and creative work?

NordFo and KP encourage everyone to contribute to continuous development and knowledge sharing within the subject area Sloyd.

After the conference, it will therefore be possible to publish your paper as a scientific article in NordFo’s journal Techne series.
